Camp in Buenos Aires! Arizona, That is!

Camp in Buenos Aires! Arizona, That is!

There are many types of RVers – what type are you?  Do you love the big resorts with lots of activities, amenities and people to visit with, or do you prefer wildlife over wild parties and plenty of quiet space between campers?  If you fall into the last category, consider taking a trip to the Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge in southern Arizona.

Buenos Aires NWR

The BANWR is located in Sasabe, which is about 60 miles south of Tucson. Scattered about, you will find 100 primitive campsites (as in boondocking) marked only with a campsite symbol and number.  Since there’s no hooking up to anything,  you can change your campsite and view anytime if there is an open site. For some great advice and information on camping in this area, this blog from Paul and Nina, the Wheelingit folks, is a must read.

Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge is a rare desert wetland so it attracts abundant bird life and other creatures to observe.  If you are an avid outdoor photographer or birdwatcher, this is a place you will thoroughly enjoy!

The refuge encompasses more than 117,000 acres with areas of grasslands, wetlands, mountain canyons with ancient volcanic rock and river banks lined with cottonwoods, sycamore and willows.

This area is fantastic for hiking or backpacking, fishing and hunting. From November through April, take the guided tour to Brown Canyon or join the Tucson Audubon Society for a free guided bird walk every Saturday at 8am at the Arivaca Cienega trail. Other trails in the area can be more challenging and range from 5 miles to 10 miles in length.

Hunting is allowed on about 90% of the refuge. You will find mule and white-tailed deer, javelina, coyotes, white-winged and mourning doves, waterfowl, coot and cottontail rabbits. Be sure to have the correct permits and licenses before hunting here.

Check out the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge Facebook page or the US Fish & Wildlife website.
